Free Pumpkin Crochet Pattern

This free pumpkin crochet pattern will help you create crochet pumpkins in 2 different sizes. They make beautiful decorations for autumn/fall, Halloween or Thanksgiving.

You can make as little or many as you like, although I chose to make 3 to create a little display ready for Halloween.

What’s more everyone commented on how beautiful they looked! So I also made crochet pumpkin bunting to match.

Pumpkin description

The pumpkins have a lovely ribbed texture. Although I decided to make mine with mustard and orange yarn I’m sure they would also look great in other colors too!

The small pumpkin measures 6cm tall by 10cm wide. Then the medium crochet pumpkin is a little larger and measures 8cm tall by 11cm wide.

I used DK yarn with the recommended hook size, 4mm. If you decided to use a different weight yarn as well as a different sized hook your pumpkins would subsequently differ in size.

How to crochet a pumpkin

The pumpkin crochet pattern is beginner friendly. Although you will also need some knowledge of sewing to complete the project. Nevertheless, the pumpkins work and quickly and are super easy to make.

Whereas I used DK yarn to make mine, this pumpkin crochet pattern is equally suitable for other yarn weights.

As long as you use the recommended hook displayed on the packaging. As well as your chosen yarn and a crochet hook, you’ll also need some toy stuffing and a tapestry needle to complete the pattern.

• Gauge: 2” x 2” square = 7 rows of 9 hdc 
• Medium: Height 8cm x Width 11cm

Pattern notes

• Chains and finishing slip stitches are not included in stitch count.
• Stitches separated with a comma are to be made in separate spaces. For example, “hdc, 2hdc” would mean “hdc in first space, 2 hdc in next space”.

Medium Pumpkin

Row 1

• Use mustard (A) yarn
• ch x 36 then start in 2nd ch from hook
• hdc x 35
• ch x 1 & turn
• (35 sts)

Row 2 – 30

• BLO hdc x 35
• ch x 1 & turn
• Fasten off after row 30 leaving a very long tail for sewing
• (29 rows of 35 sts)

Assembly

• Sew R1 and R30 together
• On the raw edge, sew through the end of every row
• Pull tight and fasten off
• Fill with toy stuffing
• On the second raw edge, sew through the end of every row, 2 sts down
• Pull tight and fasten off
• Poke in excess with your fingers
• Sew tightly through the top and bottom to flatten the pumpkin

Medium Stump

• Use yarn color C (Brown)
• sc x 8 into MR
• sl st to first st & ch x 1
• (8 sts)

Round 2

• BLO sc x 8
• sl st to first st & ch x 1

• sc x 8
• sl st to first st & ch x 1
• Fasten off after R7
• Sew stem to the top of the pumpkin

• Use Rust (B) yarn
• ch x 26 then start in 2nd ch from hook
• hdc x 25
• ch x 1 & turn
• (25 sts)

Row 2 – 30

• BLO hdc x 25
• ch x 1 & turn
• Fasten off after row 30 leaving a very long tail for sewing
• (29 rows of 25 sts)

Assembly

• Follow the same assembly instructions from the medium pumpkin on pages 3 & 4

Small Stem
