The unicorn crochet tutorial is easy and it works up really quick with blanket yarn. The only toy stuffing you’ll need for this free crochet pattern is enough to fill up the unicorns little horn. You’ll also need 2 sets of safety eyes or some tapestry skills to make your own.

Abbreviations

USA Terminology (UK Translation)

  • BLO – Back loop only
  • ch – Chain
  • FLO – Front loop only
  • MR – Magic ring
  • R – Round/Row
  • sc – Single crochet
  • 2sc – 2 sc in 1 space (increase)
  • sl st – Slip stitch
  • st/sts – Stitch/Stitches

Pattern notes

  • Chains and slip stitches are not included in stitch count.
  • Stitches separated with a comma are to be made in separate spaces. EG. “sc, dc” would mean “single crochet in first space, double crochet in the next space”.
  • Change colour while completing the previous stitch.
  • Use tapestry eyes only for babies or young children.

Reversible unicorn – free crochet pattern

Unicorn Body


Crochet 2 unicorn bodies, 1 in lavender & 1 in white

Round 1

  • sc x 8 into a magic ring
  • sl st to first st & ch x 1
  • Do not weave in the magic ring tail

8 sts

Round 2

  • 2sc x 8
  • sl st to first st & ch x 1

16 sts

Round 3

  • (2sc, sc) 8 times
  • sl st to first st & ch x 1

24 sts

Round 4

  • (2sc, sc x 2) 8 times
  • sl st to first st & ch x 1

32 sts

Rounds 5 – 10

  • sc x 32
  • sl st to first st & ch
  • Fasten off after round 10

6 rounds

Faces


  • Insert eyes on R6, 3 sts between them
  • Make tapestry nostrils between R7 & R8
  • Make a tapestry mouth over R8 & R9

Body Assembly


Round 11

  • With both pieces inside out, tie the magic ring yarn ends together
  • Fold white body over lavender body
  • Make sure the both faces are in the same position
  • Use lavender yarn
  • Join both pieces by sl st inside loops together (white BLO & lavender FLO)
  • Fasten off & weave in ends

Unicorn Mane


Crochet 2 unicorn manes.

Row 1

  • Use tutti frutti yarn
  • ch x 11 then start in 2nd ch from the hook
  • 2sc x 10
  • do not fasten off

Row 2

  • ch x 11 then start in 2nd ch from the hook
  • 2sc x 10
  • do not fasten off

Row 3

  • ch x 11 then start in 2nd ch from the hook
  • 2sc x 10
  • Fasten off leaving tail for sewing

Assembly

Sew unicorn mane over round 1 of bodies

Unicorn Horns


Crochet 2 unicorns horns. 1 lavender and 1 white.

Round 1

  • sc x 5 in a magic ring
  • sl st to first st & ch x 1

5 sts

Round 2

  • 2sc, sc x 4
  • sl st to first st & ch x 1

6 sts

Round 3

  • 2sc, sc x 5
  • sl st to first st & ch x 1

7 sts

Round 4

  • 2sc, sc x 6
  • sl st to first st
  • Fasten off leaving tail for sewing

8 sts

Assembly

  • Fill the unicorn horns with toy stuffing
  • Sew horn in front of the unicorns mane. It should cover rounds 1, 2 & 3.

Unicorn Ears


Crochet 4 unicorn ears, 2 of each colour

Round 1

  • sc x 8 into a magic ring
  • sl st to first st
  • fasten off leaving long tail for sewing

8 sts

Assembly

  • Fold the unicorns ear in half & sew base together
  • Sew ears between rounds 2 & 3 of the unicorns body

Unicorn Legs


Crochet 4 unicorn legs.

Round 1

  • Use tutti frutti yarn
  • sc x 8 in a magic ring
  • sl st to first st & ch x 1

8 sts

Round 2

  • sc x 8
  • sl st to first st & ch x 1

8 sts

Round 3

  • sc x 8
  • sl st to first st
  • Fasten off leaving tail for sewing

Assembly

  • Use tutti frutti yarn
  • Sew one side of leg to R10 lavender BLO & R11 sl sts
  • Sew other side of leg to R10 white FLO & R11 sl sts
  • Gap of 7 sts between front paws
  • Gap of 3 sts between front & back paws
